Rain poured down hard upon the land before Halo. The smell danger and sweat filled the air, overcoming the sweet scent of the rain. If Halo's heart hadn't been hardened at such a young age he would have been terrified. But, he wasn't. He glanced over his shoulder at the other stallions and mares that awaited what seemed like a inevitable fate in the gorge below. He turned his attention back to the task at hand. Their leader, a strong mustang called Uthapa, paced the muddy ground in front of them. Halo had never seen his leader so worried before. The relentless warrior looked almost as fearful as a child. Was it true? What the others that had left them before this battle had said? Could this war really be the end of them? Surely not. Soon, the sound of thousands of hoof beats echoed off the rock walls. Everybody, even Halo, stepped back in awe at what seemed like a endless platoon of stallions pouring into the vally. After the last horse had past by, another form appeared. Tall, dark, thirsting for power, and death to all lights. Halo had heard the others call him Kyr'am which meant death in another language. When the Dark king paused in the center of the vally there was a shuddering chill that ran through the ground and into the bodies of Spartan horses. Halo swallowed hard. Uthapa had taken his place at the lead of the group. He whispered softly, his breath almost getting carried away in the wind," Get ready, men." He said. There was a moment of silence. A shrill neigh broke the thick air between the two armies. Uthapa answered the warning and charged. Halo reacted fast, galloping into the sea of dark warriors. Lightning tore at the sky. Only showing the silhouettes of the lights as they were cut down. In a instant, Halo was showered in daggered hooves. Halo clashed with another stallion who was twice his size and able to stand his ground against two of the light horses. Halo snapped at this stallion's neck, tasting blood, unsure who's it was. He felt a painful tear as some of his own skin was tore away. His eyes watered, blurring his vision for a second. He let out a revengeful squeal, clamping down on his opponent's leg. He then realized maybe it wasn't a good idea. As he pulled away, he was met with a body slam, sending them both tumbling to the ground. He was the first to his feet, shoving the stallion back to the ground. He collected his strength and pounded his daggers into the side of the dark verd. Soon, the stallion moved no more, his rib cage broken from Halo's powerful blows. Halo gasped for a breath. He sighed knowing what he had done. He didn't even notice the shadow as it fell across the land in front of him. A second too late, he whirled around in time to get shoved into the rocks behind him. He felt a crush in his leg, then nothing...
When Halo awoke, there was a dead silence hovering over the vally. He squirmed around trying to stand. Looking back he saw his leg jammed between to logs that had washed down in the storm. He gritted his teeth as he managed to get free of the trap and painfully to his feet. He shook the water and mud from his mane and coat. He did a quick check of his wounds and then scanned the area. What he saw sent shivers up his spine. He carefully walked over to the gorges end and looked out over the river underneath. It was littered with horses that were one time his teammates. Then were either dead or dying. He caught sight of something out of the corner of his eye. Uthapa was lying in the rubble of the battle, barely alive.
" Sir." Halo cried as he stumbled to his master's side.
" Halo.." Uthapa replied," I..thought you were dead."
" I am far from it, sir."
Uthapa winced," You must listen to these words i have for you." He said," The darks will continue to destroy the lands that we call home. You must stop them."
" Sir," Halo said," How can i? I am only one stallion."
" No, you aren't." Uthapa said, his voice fading," You are the last of the Spartan horses. You are a warrior, trained in battle to assist the lights in every war they may have to fight. You must promise me. Promise me... you'll always defend the light army from the danger that always awaits them."
" Uthapa.."
" Promise me! "
Halo drew in a breath, letting it out slowly and shakily. He was losing the only horse that had ever come as close to being his father as any. He had been taken away from his family when he was young," I promise." He said finally.
Uthapa smiled, then slowly, his smile disappeared into a frown. Halo could have sworn that Uthapa's spirit was carried away in a gust of wind that blew through his mane. He closed his eyes at the wind's cool touch and sighed. He picked his way out of the vally and headed for the boundary. When he reached the edge, he looked out over the road ahead. He cast a quick glance back at the only life he had ever known. He forgot the throb in his leg and reared high into air, sending a cry that even the deafest of horses could have heard, swearing to return someday and claim revenge on the darks. With that, he whipped around and faded into the distance.
